Biblical Box Office: How Productions Like The Chosen Are Bringing Christianity to a Screen Near You

The Bible is back in Hollywood — and audiences are showing up in huge numbers.

According to a recent report by CBC News (Apr. 20, 2025), biblical stories are enjoying a surprising resurgence both at the box office and on streaming platforms. The animated film King of Kings, retelling the life of Jesus, stunned critics with a $19 million U.S. debut. Meanwhile, The Chosen season five, with its theatrical premiere strategy, has earned more than $36 million worldwide.

Amazon Prime’s House of David also proved faith content isn’t just for the big screen, pulling in more than 22 million viewers within its first 17 days. Even mainstream studios like Lionsgate are joining the wave, with The Best Christmas Pageant Ever crossing $40 million despite tough competition. And on the horizon are projects from Martin Scorsese, Terrence Malick, and Mel Gibson — all rooted in Christ’s story.

Jonathan Roumie, who plays Jesus in The Chosen, summed it up well: “People are hungry for something. They’re hungry for change. They’re hungry for positive. They’re hungry for light.”

Why It Matters

For Christians, this trend is more than entertainment — it’s an opportunity. Faith-driven productions are reaching both believers and non-believers with the hope of the gospel in new, creative ways. Hollywood may be rediscovering what the church has always known: God’s story still captivates hearts.

As audiences lean into truth, beauty, and redemption on screen, the question for us becomes — how can we, too, bring light and life into the cultural spaces we occupy?
